Bottom of the Basket (B.O.B.):
It’s funny how some problems continue to get talked about year after year. Cashiers checking the bottom of the basket may not rank as a top 5 shrink prevention priority, but it is a very good area to get a quick ROI and set the tone for best practice discipline. Therefore it can be looked at as a shrink control Hub Program. A Hub Program is one that reaches beyond its own domain to affect shrink control consciousness in more areas. Of course cashiers must be trained and monitored to check the bottom of the basket, but technology in this area is cheap, it’s a great enabler and it is effective carrying a solid ROI.
- Teach cashiers to greet all customers with a warm smile, excellent eye contact, and a positive greeting like: “Hi, my name is Sally,
Did you find everything you were looking for, and have you removed all items from in and under your cart?”
- Be sure that Front End Customer Service Managers are looking for B.O.B. situations to help cashiers prevent loss.
